Micro-Chipping
Losing an exotic bird is an unfortunate but real occurrence.
It is all too common to hear that a beloved family bird accidentally
flew out the door never to be seen again. Even with their wings clipped,
some birds can get lift when they flap their wings and catch the
wind just right and fly up to the top of trees and from there fly
away never to be seen again. Tragically most of the birds are never
found because their owners failed to identify them. Moreover exotic
bird theft is an unfortunate danger that really exists.
Several incidents have occurred where a pet bird that was lost was
lucky enough to have been found, yet the owner could not prove it
was their bird because of a lack of identification and/or almost
all birds characteristics are the same.
Aluminum or stainless steel leg bands can help identify a bird,
yet they hold limited amount of information on them (basically a
few letters and numbers) that is typically not useful for retrieving
the lost or stolen bird as leg bands can be easily removed by thieves
and smugglers and therefore it is not a permanent means of identification.
The micro-chips are tiny and are delivered through a hypothermic
needle under the skin and into the breast muscle of the bird. The
procedure is rapidly performed. This procedure can be safely performed
by a qualified veterinarian and not only on birds but also on small
mammals, reptiles and even fish!
Micro-chipping vouchers are available for purchase at a discounted
price of $27.50 (reg. $35.00). Vouchers are accepted at http://www.avianexotic.com
and it is performed by Don J. Harris, DVM.
