Bird Body
  • Abdomen:  the belly
  • Auriculars (ear converts):  feathers covering the ear openings, behind the eyes
  • Beak:  the bill
  • Breast:  area above the belly and under the throat
  • Cere:  waxy-looking ridge on the upper beak of some birds
  • Claws:  talons at the end of the toes
  • Cloaca:  common chamber at the end of the digestive and urogenital systems
  • Coverts:  smaller feathers covering the large wing and tail feathers
  • Crop:  a pouch-like enlargement of the gullet in which food is partially digested
  • Crown:  top of the head
  • Forehead:  area directly above the eyes
  • Gullet:  esophagus
  • Lore:  area between the eyes and the bill on each side of the face
  • Mandible:  lower bill
  • Maxilla: upper bill
  • Nape:  back of the neck
  • Primaries:  main flight feathers on the outer part of the wings
  • Rump:  area above the tail
  • Scapulars:  shoulder feathers
  • Secondaries:  smaller flight feathers on the wings, above the primaries
  • Toes:  digits of the feet
  • Throat:  area under the head and above the chest
  • Vent:  excretory opening of the digestive tract
